Middle school has been learning some observational drawing techniques with some new drawing tools. Students were excited to try out using rags, kneadable erasers, blending stumps and charcoal. Our guiding question this quarter has been: How do artists show people, their moods and expressions? And how can we represent the visual and expressive effects of light?
Before we began, we discussed the meaning of value, contrast and shading and discussed the possible light sources in the following images; noting where the cast shadows and highlights are. We then practiced how to achieve a variety of values using charcoal and blending tools.
After several studio sessions, in progress consultations with their instructor and our class critique, students were graded with the following rubric.
